    CALDER NORTHERN DIVISION
    TRAIN ORDERS
    October 2022

Welcome to the latest edition of Train Orders.

    Member news

Tony Gath and his wife Carol, succumbed to Covid but thankfully are now feeling better and on the
road to a full recovery. We have a new member, Bill Matthews, who is a retired vicar from Liverpool.

    The Committee

This is advanced notice that I wish to step down from the role of secretary at the year end, so
please think about whether you could takeover that role.
We have decided to call an Extraordinary General Meeting for the meeting on 10th December.
The reasons arise from the poor attendance by members over the last couple of years due to
illness and other commitments, the fact that the weekend layout roster has a small band of about
11 members on it and the groups’ general financial situation. There is also the fact that CHC
appear to be wanting to open for more days and what that means for Calder Northern.
    The Convention
Preparations for the convention appear to be going well. We have over 100 registered attendees,
the conference dinner is well booked. There will be 8 layouts, traders and the NMRA library. If
you want a particular book from the library get in touch with the librarian to ensure he brings it to
    the convention for you.
After many trials and tribulation over hotels I think you will find the Wychwood Park comfortable
and welcoming. It is not as big as we would have liked but the alternative would have been no
    convention.
    The “virtual” NMRA
The “Brew & Natter” virtual meetings on Saturdays have continued during the summer. It has
been noted that attendance has diminished somewhat now that we are no longer in lockdown.
Please do consider joining in as it can be very enjoyable and a great way to get to know people
from other parts of the UK
    Layouts
I would like, on behalf of the committee, to thank Paul for all his hard work in keeping the layout
manned at weekends this year. He has managed this with a work crew of about 10/11 people
only. Well done to Paul and thank you to the volunteers.
    Crewe Heritage Centre
Recently there was a meeting of the volunteers/members of the Heritage Trust on a Wednesday
morning. Roy and Terry attended the meeting and made some notes of the proceedings. These
    are the notes-
Firstly Gordon Heddon introduced each member of the Trust. Most of them we know already, but
significant new members appear to be:-
Chris Simon – experience of running heritage railway in N. Wales.
    Kevin Edwards – Volunteer Co-ordinator.
Vicki (?surname) – Crewe Town Council Heritage Office – now a permanent post. Spends
one day each week on CHC work. This is her first local government job. Previous roles
have been caring for 2000 years’ worth of artefacts in York Minster with liaisons with NRM
and various museum and grant/lottery applications.
There was a brief slide show of ‘then and now’ showing how the Centre has been tidied in the past
6 or so years. Specifically reclamation of full car park, removal of LNWR clutter and general
tidying of debris. This has been reflected in online reviews of the attraction with none below 3* this
    year.
In 2020 the site applied for a Town Investment Fund Grant. This failed because of governance
issues. Subsequently the Trust has undergone a governance review to make further applications
more likely to succeed. There will have to be safeguarding training and better member records.
Kevin said that they would introduce role descriptions, to be produced in conjunction with the
volunteers so that new members would have a clear idea of what to do.
There will be a volunteers policy and handbook. Prospective volunteers can only be put on a
waiting list until this is in place,
There is a need for a proper management structure so that CHC can get museum accreditation.
This would lead to loans from other museums [Accredited museums will generally only lend to
other accredited museums. The accreditation covers aspects such as customer experience and
treatment of artefacts. An accredited organisation will always take precedence in the distribution
of artefacts. e.g. A class 91 has arrived on site today but will only be here temporarily as an
    accredited museum wants it.]
Vicky said her remit is to try and keep artefacts in Crewe and look after them. She is keen to
build up the Centre as an attraction and increase spend in Crewe.
Seven areas have been identified where the Trust is lacking, including project management,
finances, visitor ops. and charity legislation.
CHC is currently a company limited by guarantee. This will be considered and MAY be changed
to a charity company . I’m a little puzzled by this comment as Crewe Heritage Trust is already a
    registered charity.
There will be new rules about election of Trust members and how long they may serve. Which will
require changes to the governance document. The lease needs to be renegotiated to 25 years,
which is complicated by the land ownership.
The Wednesday opening during the summer gained £1,900 in café and shop receipts.

Devils Creek – Sales of surplus stock from the layout are continuing & can be found on Ebay.

of being set up the whole time and the enhanced possibilities that arise both from that and more
space.Progress on the project is continuing.

Western Mills. It has been proposed that we organise some rudimentary operating sessions for
the Wednesday sessions. This will allow us to develop an operating schema which could be tried
on at a weekend meet. If anyone is interested in knowing more/joining in the operating sessions
talk to Len Ford who has devised an intriguing computer programme.
The Crewe Heritage Centre Visitor Season 2023 commenced Saturday 1st April.
Myself & Roy Harris hosted visitors to the Clubroom.
Roy gave me a good introduction into the setting up & running of Western Mills and we ran some
fantastic locomotives, pictured below, including the Fox River Valley SD-24 & the Union Pacific

    AGM

The Calder Northern AGM was held on February 11th. I will endeavour to circulate the minutes in the very near future.

Devils Creek – this layout has been sold and was collected in early January. We received £265 for it. Ebay sales of surplus stock from the layout are going well.

Baltic Street – this has replaced Devils Creek and will be re-planned in order to take advantage of being set up the whole time and the enhanced possibilities that arise both from that and more space.Alan,Roy and Terry have been making good progress in working on this exciting new

    project in its new home.

Western Mills. It has been proposed that we organise some rudimentary operating sessions for

There are work placements for catering students from Crewe College; hopefully other areas will follow.
Cheshire Connect is providing pro bono legal, management and H&S advice. There has been a professional H&S report which was not good.

They are looking at heating for the hall and had a surveyor in to evaluate options.
The red signal centre will go with HS2, so the land would be available on the far side of the
Chester line with the possibility for having a proper entrance over there with a bridge (described as ‘no problem’ by the surveyor).

Roy introduced himself as the de facto representative of CN. He made a plea for better communications with CHC on two levels. On overall strategy of the Trust and day to day matters. The example was given that CN had not been notified of the summer opening and were operating power tools when a child walked into the layout room. The CHC response was rather defensive, saying communications was a two way process. Roy noted that we could not ask about something if we didn’t know it was happening in the first place. John Gough was kind enough to support Roy on this. Vicky said that comms. was important and thanked me for bringing the matter up.

Various existing communication methods were mentioned:

    TeamCreweHC Facebook page

Gordon’s summary of Trust meetings posted in the volunteers’ cabin.

Roy asked if the latter was typed electronically could it was be copied to the CN sectrary.
Roy, further asked if the volunteer safeguarding/training would affect CN members or if we would be a separate entity. Vicky thought that eventually there would be a position where our members would have to be members of the Centre, then everybody the visitors met could be operating on the same footing. Chris thought it may be helpful if he eventually had a list of CN members who attended the site.

There were numerous questions from active volunteers how this would affect site operations etc.
From the Calder Northern perspective the committee foresees a need for quite a bit of discussion
with the CHC trustees to deal with issues arising from the direction in which they appear to want to move.

    Alan.

    TRAIN ORDERS

    March 2022

Welcome to the latest edition of Train Orders.

    Member news

Having been in hospital for a broken leg, Les Herriott is now home and receiving treatment to re-
habilitate has leg. He has sent his apologies for not being able to come to the AGM. I am sure we
all wish Les well and continued recovery.

    The Committee

Update from last month, Roy is still having difficulties in finding a new bank account for the club.
    His comments are below :-
Further to discussion as a meeting last year, the Chairman and Treasurer applied for a new bank account,
initially with Lloyds. The application was rejected on the grounds that they were not currently opening
accounts for organisations already holding accounts elsewhere.
In December we applied to Virgin Money (aka Clydesdale/Yorkshire Bank). Our application is “complete”.
However, five attempts to inform them of errors in the documents they need signing electronically have not
produced a response. I submitted a formal complaint on 28th February.
Meanwhile we are re-visiting the 14-page Change of Details form for the old Santander account.
Thanks are due to Roy and Tony for their efforts.

    AGM

The minutes of the last AGM and agenda for this one will be available on Saturday. If you have
any points you wish to raise let me know.
    Meetings at Crewe
The Heritage Centre will be re-opening on 2nd April and we will need to man the layout from the
date. Paul Mitchell is organising this.
The list of meeting dates is on both the NMRA website and the Calder Northern one. I’ve also
included them at the end of this copy of Train Orders.
The committee has been thinking about the regular meets with a view to making them more
interesting and enjoyable, Tony is leading this. Devils Creek has been opened up and is available
to run should anyone wish to. If anyone has any suggestions for things to do in the meetings let
    Tony know.

    Conventions

Planning for The Crewe North Junction makes progress. We have 8 layouts and 6 traders booked
for the convention. Black Diamonds and Warley CanAm group will be bringing their Freemo
modular layouts. Black Diamonds is a known quantity but the CanAm modules are virtually all
new. I visited Warley this week to see what they had and was impressed with the quality of the
    modelling.
We will need volunteers to act as stewards at the convention and a couple of layouts have asked
could we provide relief operators. So if you fancy running someone else’s’ layout and learning
how they do things please do come forward.
The convention will be an opportunity to show the rest of the NMRA and outsiders what Calder
Northern is capable of and a chance to perhaps attract some new members.

    The “virtual” NMRA

The next national Brew & Natter session will be 19th March at 1600, note the different time.
The next CN zoom meeting is 28th March at 7pm. If attendance is again good then I will arrange
for more meetings going further into the year.
The digital NMRA magazine is available from 1st April, please note that you must have a logon to
the national website, www.nmra.org to access the magazine files.

    Layouts

Much scenic work has been done on North West Mills after all the track work changes. There is
one point left to power up and still quite a bit of cosmetic changes to make to bring it back up to
    exhibition standard.
Devils Creek is uncovered and if people would like to operate it this Saturday let me know. It
requires work on the electrics and scenery of the reverse loops to get it ready for the Convention.
Two of the three boards for Baltic Street are fitted with point motors and wiring. Once the third
board is fitted with point motors we can start on the control panel and the scenery.
That’s all for now, stay well everybody,

    Alan.

Sadly Les Herriott has been in hospital for a broken leg but was discharged from hospital on 1st
February. Currently his son is looking after him, I’m sure you’ll all join with me in wishing Les a
    speedy recovery.

    The Committee

To keep you up to date. Roy is having some difficulties in finding a new bank account for the club.
He is looking for a bank that has an active branch in Crewe where he can pay in money and this is
proving difficult, everyone wants you to use electronic banking and go cashless. Thanks Roy for
all your efforts and for Tony for his assistance to Roy.

    Meetings at Crewe

The Heritage Centre will be re-opening on 2nd April and we will need to man the layout from the
date. Paul Mitchell will be in touch with everyone shortly to ask about peoples availability to help
with this important task. It is important because it is a condition of our lease with CHC that the
layout is running when they are open.

The list of meeting dates is on both the NMRA website and the Calder Northern one. I’ve also
included them at the end of this copy of Train Orders.
The committee has been thinking about the regular meets with a view to making them more
interesting and enjoyable, Tony is leading this. Current ideas being considered are opening up
Devils Creek and running it rather than ignoring it, having a proper operating session on Western
Mills and having a working weekend on all layouts in preparation for the convention. If anyone has
    any suggestions, let me know.

    Conventions

Planning for The Crewe North Junction makes progress. While things have been hampered by
Covid and ill health the hotel is booked, an initial floor plan for the exhibition hall has been drawn
up, the convention website with its’ booking form is up and running and exhibitors and traders are
    being confirmed.
The convention will be an opportunity to show the rest of the NMRA and outsiders what Calder
Northern is capable, of and a chance to perhaps attract some new members.

    The “virtual” NMRA

The next national Brew & Natter session will be 19th February at 1600, note the different time.
Following comments from members that the weekend and zoom meetings were too close together
I have re-arranged things. Therefore, the next CN zoom meeting is 28th February at 7pm. There
are also meetings scheduled for 28th March and 25th April, again at 7pm. If attendance is good
then I will arrange for more meetings going further into the year.

    General

Work has progressed on the changes to NW Mills, although progress has been hampered by Covid
precautions. The next layout to be worked on is Devils Creek, while I have been progressing Baltic Street
at home. There is still quite a lot to be done to be ready for the convention, so if anyone hasa some time
on a Wednesday morning we would be pleased to see them from 10am onwards.
That’s all for now, stay well everybody,

    Alan.
