TRAIN ORDERS September 2019
Hi everyone,
Just a quick reminder – please note that our September Meet and the October Meet are each being put back 1 week? This means September Meet will be on Saturday 21st and the October Meet on Sunday 13th.
This is to avoid conflict with the “Wheels of War” weekend on 14/15th September and another event the following month. It may only mean swapping weekends around for those listed to operate.
Paul, is also advising a revised rota (below) which he has agreed with those who have kindly volunteered to cope during the month of October. The Heritage Centre will be open to the public in October which is an extension to their normal open season.
Now to usual TO matters!
In the last Train Orders, I advised that Stuart Wood had been one of those persons displaced after the Beechmere assisted care home in Crewe suffered a major fire incident rendering the building unfit for occupation. I happened to see Stuart last Thursday in Sainsbury’s, Nantwich with his care person, Stuart leaning heavily on the trolley to avoid falling. Stuart did not look at all well and he told me he had lost all his belongings; his clothes, special treasured belongings plus his electric invalid scooter. His carer explained however, he had that very morning been reunited with his model of HMS Victory (or was it Victorious) that he had been making. It has been recorded that many local residents of the area who went into the building whilst it was on fire grabbed as many things as they could knowing that memories were probably more important to those 150 occupants than clothes and the like. I wished Stuart well from all of us, which he appreciated.
You will have no doubt seen the mailings from Paul Mitchell recently asking for some additional help for the weekend operation of the layout whilst the Heritage Centre is open to the public during October. I do hope you can help where required. This matter has been sprung on us and your committee felt we had to try and cover each of the weekends as we did not want to have any issues that could work against the group. There are still a few places to fill so please do help where you can. Current position is as follows –

Many years ago, Steve Park along with Les Herriot arranged for a set of Calder Northern freight car decals to be printed. These were produced in HO scale and N scale in both black and white so that they could be used on vehicles of differing background colour. The decals also included a logo depicting the red and white rose as the then Division membership located in both Lancashire and Yorkshire. Steve has recently agreed we can go ahead and produce these again for members at a small charge. Alf Milliken is able to produce these using his printer and can now produce the white lettering for us. We intend to do as last time by making these available for both scales and in two different sizes in each scale so they can be used on boxcars, tank cars and gondolas etc. Obviously, we will need to make arrangements for you to order your requirements and details will be sent out as soon as we have finalised the price per decal sheet and how we are going to impose the decals on the sheet of decal film.
After a long gap in communication due to preparations for moving home, Tom Griffiths has asked me to pass on his best wishes to you all. Tom has had to spend much time downsizing and his home layout has had to go and a lot of his models are now with his model club. He says the move from a 5-bed home with attic and basement to an apartment is proving hard as we all know we tend to accumulate much more than we need (as Tom says, too much junk!). He therefore, will not be seeing us this year for either the Aberdeen or Warley events but hopes he may be able to get over to Crewe in the Spring.
The British Region Convention is in Aberdeen this year and if anyone is attending then do let me know. Jonathan Small, Calder Northern member, will know if you take Roundhouse magazine, be our proposed new Vice Chairman and we wish him well in his new role. Jonathan reminds me that if anyone is to submit models for AP judging then please ensure all the documentation is completed in full. I am still uncertain about attending but could help with any information that may be needed.
Finally, for this newsletter, Christmas is already in the shops and this reminds us that we need to think about donated prizes for our Group Christmas raffle. As you know this is one of our major fund-raising efforts for the Group and any donated prizes are much appreciated. Bob Bevan says he again welcomes a varied selection of prizes this year!
